Before going into recording "Round the Houses", I had a pretty good idea of how I wanted it to come out. My basic idea for the song was a sort of rockabilly/shuffle feel, with an infectious rhythm and momentum, and a strong chorus. What Shayne (Byrne: producer/collaborator) brought to the arrangement was a great drum and keyboard sound, and the idea to add horns to the chorus, which I was sceptical about, but it ended up really lifting the song into a more interesting place. As well as that we worked to get the best out of the section after the second chorus, which I envisioned as a sort of floaty, dreamy sound with vocal and keyboard melody lines intersecting and panning. We had to work to get the rhythm tracks right, as the song has a slightly off-kilter rhythm, in a Pixies sort of way (I hope), but I think we did the song proud.
lyrics
Lines are blurring something more than what you thought
Something that you think its not
Some things never change
A feelings hanging
A feeling that you can't escape
No matter how much you take
It never goes away
Thinking of leaving
Every day throws up a sign
Feels like you’ve wasted to much time
Waiting on yourself
We’re round and round and round the houses
Round and round inside your head
Round and round and round the houses
Round and round And back again
Wheels are spinning
Even though the car is stalled
Choking smoking engulfs us all
Waiting for the fall
Head like a traffic jam with secrets that I could never keep
Concrete blocks around my feet
Afraid to take the leap
We’re round and round and round the houses
Round and round inside your head
Round and round and round the houses
Round and round and back
We’re round and round and round the houses
Round and round inside your head
Round and round and round the houses
Round and round and back
back again back again
back again back again
